Answers to the questions our Surrey dentists are most often asked about Invisalign.
What exactly is Invisalign?
The Invisalign system is an alternative way to straighten your teeth and achieve the smile a straighter smile without relying on metal braces.
A series of clear plastic aligners will be made to fit your teeth during each stage of your treatment process. These clear aligners can be quite difficult to detect to a casual observer when worn, and they can be removed when you eat and to brush and floss your teeth.
How does Invisalign work?
Your Invisalign aligners are custom-made to fit your teeth, and will move them little by little as your treatment progresses. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks before it is replaced by the next in the series. This continues until the final position of your teeth is reached. Your Invisalign treatment time will be determined by your doctor based on your specific needs.
How long does Invisalign take?
Your Invisalign treatment time will be determined based on your needs. If your misalignment is mild, it could take only a few months. If it's more severe, it could take up to a year, or more. On average, Invisalign takes about the same amount of time as treatment with traditional braces does. Learn More »
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
The Invisalign aligners are made with USP Class VI medical-grade, high molecular weight, polyurethane resins, and are BPA free.
What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are...
- Difficult to see to the casual observer when worn
- Not reliant on brackets or wires
- Require infrequent, short dental visits
- Require no adjustment appointments (you simply change to a new aligner every other week)
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Anyone who has healthy teeth and gums is a potential candidate for Invisalign. More and more adults are deciding to undergo orthodontic treatment these days, in large part because lower profile options like Invisalign have become available.
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can certainly be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has created a line of aligners called Invisalign Teen to meet the unique needs of teenagers.
How often do I need to visit the dentist with Invisalign?
In addition to your regular dental cleanings and checkups, you will have to visit your dentist every 4 - 6 weeks so that she can monitor the progress of your Invisalign treatment. These visits are shorter than those required for metal braces, however, because your dentist will not have to make any adjustments to your orthodontic appliances.
How many sets of aligners will I need?
This will depend on the severity of your misalignment. Only your dentist can give you an accurate estimate of how long treatment will take, based on a careful evaluation of your bite during an initial consultation.
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are removable so you can play sports without worrying about causing damage to your aligners. However, keep in mind that Invisalign aligners must be kept in for about 22 hours a day, so plan your time carefully.
Are there dietary restrictions during Invisalign treatment?
No. Unlike with braces, you can eat anything you like during your Invisalign treatment! This is because you can simply take your aligners out when it's time to eat, and put them back in when you're done (after brushing and flossing, of course!).
How much does Invisalign cost?
As with any orthodontic treatment option, the cost of Invisalign varies from person to person. It depends largely on the complexity of your misalignment, as this will determine how many aligners you will need to correct the problem. Only your Invisalign provider will be able to tell you the actual cost of your treatment.
